The hotel is located just outside the small village Platania as most people know. For you that don’t know Platania, this is the place where you find the beautiful long beaches along the Chania coast – so here you can travel with your whole family.

Platanias beach is shallow with fine sand. This is the biggest beach, but there is also a row with smaller beaches and nice swimming spots. In other words, this fits you that want a bit of quietness and calm or if you want a little more life and stir.

For those who like the cultural, and to be nearby, you can visit the German military cemetery from the war, or the church in Maleme. The cemetery is nicely located on a hill above Maleme.

The tombs are in a row, and definitely have the best view imaginable from a cemetery. The cemetery was built by the Germans, and they are the ones who make sure that it is still kept in perfect condition with the German standard.

It is intriguing to walk around and read on the memorial plaques and see how many young boys lost their lives. On this burial ground there lays 4400 fallen German soldiers who fell during the occupation of Crete in 1941.

Many of us here probably get a gripping reading of the inscriptions, with name, rank / soldier designation and date of birth and death. It all seems so pointless today.

At the time, it was very serious, with a fight against an aggressive Nazi Germany led by a fanatic with twisted ideas. “Never again on April 9”, we say, but there are people with twisted ideas today as well, and some of them have more power than is nice to think about. For many, this will be a gripping, but also a bit shocking experience.

Just below the memorial it’s also the airport the Germans built during the war. The cemetery was opened in 1968.

The church in Maleme is a 5-minute walk from the hotel. The church was built in 1912, and its gigantic and towers wildly in the landscape. It is therefore assumed that they had big plans for the area.

Under the war in Crete, the village was bombed. There is therefore not much left of old buildings in today’s Maleme. There are memorials everywhere.

Outside the church, a small memorial grove has been set up for the fallen people from United Kingdom. Family members come here and put down memorial plaques either to the dead from the war, or when a veteran dies. If you walk a bit in the area not too far from the village, you can also find the Minoan tomb.

The place has been inhabited since Minoan times. The place was then called Malama, which meant gold. It is belived that they had gold mines here in ancient times.

With access to the buses, rental car or bicycles, there is nothing between you and a day of exiting experiences and adventures.
